What you'll do...
About the team:
Walmart's Marketplace Platform is the backbone of a thriving ecosystem connecting millions of third-party sellers to hundreds of millions of customers worldwide. As Director of Engineering, Marketplace Platform, you will lead the engineering teams responsible for the APIs, systems, and infrastructure that power seller onboarding, partner integrations, catalog management, order orchestration, and the end-to-end partner experience at one of the world's largest retail platforms.
This is a high-impact leadership role sitting at the intersection of scale, commerce, and platform engineering. You will own the technical vision and execution for a portfolio of mission-critical, cross-cutting platform services — spanning developer experience, communications infrastructure, identity and seller data, reporting, and externally-facing APIs — that collectively set the standard for how all verticals within the Marketplace ecosystem build and integrate. You'll build and grow a world-class engineering organization capable of delivering innovation at Walmart speed.
What You'll Own
The Marketplace Platform team owns a suite of cross-cutting capabilities that serve as the foundational layer for all verticals and business units across the Marketplace ecosystem.
At the core of the team's mission is platform standardization — defining shared frameworks, reusable components, and reference architectures that enforce consistent implementation patterns across all Marketplace verticals, so every team building on the platform does so with speed and predictability. Underpinning nearly every vertical interaction is the Identity, Seller Profile, and Org Data layer — the authoritative source of truth for who sellers are, how they're structured, and how they relate to one another. This data powers access control, seller experiences, and downstream systems across the board.
The platform also owns a multi-channel communication infrastructure covering email, push, in-app messaging, SMS, and webhooks — built to deliver the right message to the right recipient reliably and at enterprise scale. On the integration front, the team is responsible for the health and governance of all external-facing APIs, maintaining SLA commitments, ensuring observability, and providing a consistent, high-quality integration experience for third-party developers and partners worldwide.
Internally, the team operates a self-serve Reporting Portal that empowers business units to independently onboard and surface diverse report types without requiring platform team intervention, democratizing data access across the ecosystem. For external builders and partners, the Developer Portal serves as the front door to the Marketplace — managing developer accounts, guiding onboarding workflows, hosting API documentation, and streamlining third-party integrations. Rounding out the platform is a robust Sandbox environment that lets both internal teams and external partners safely test and validate their API integrations end-to-end before going live, reducing integration risk and accelerating time-to-launch.
Engineering Leadership & Strategy
- Define and drive the multi-year technical roadmap for Marketplace Platform, aligning engineering investments with business growth and partner ecosystem goals.
- Own the end-to-end architecture for partner-facing APIs, seller tooling, marketplace integrations, and shared platform capabilities — setting standards for reliability, scalability, and developer experience.
- Champion platform-wide standardization: establish and enforce consistent implementation patterns, shared service contracts, and reusable frameworks across all Marketplace verticals and business units.
- Partner closely with Product Management, Data Science, Legal, and Business Operations to shape platform strategy and translate business needs into engineering outcomes.
- Lead technical governance: establish and enforce engineering best practices, coding standards, observability frameworks, and security posture across all owned services.
People & Organization
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of senior engineers, engineering managers, and tech leads — fostering a culture of ownership, psychological safety, and continuous learning.
- Drive recruiting and retention of senior engineering talent; grow the team through thoughtful hiring, strong onboarding, and compelling career development programs.
- Build an inclusive, high-performing engineering culture where diverse perspectives are celebrated and every engineer can do the best work of their career.
- Coach engineering managers on team health, delivery velocity, and performance management.
Platform Delivery & Operations
- Own delivery of complex, cross-functional engineering programs with clarity and accountability — from discovery through production launch and beyond.
- Drive operational excellence: instill SLO/SLA discipline, incident response rigor, and a continuous improvement mindset across all platform services — including communication pipelines, reporting infrastructure, and external APIs.
- Set the bar for API design, developer experience, and partner integration quality to ensure Marketplace Platform is the preferred platform for sellers and partners globally.
- Champion platform reliability and scalability, ensuring systems can support Walmart's growth trajectory — including peak traffic events at scale.
Innovation & Technical Excellence
- Stay current with industry trends in platform engineering, API ecosystems, distributed systems, developer portals, and communication infrastructure — bringing relevant innovations back to the team.
- Sponsor internal technical communities (guilds, tech talks, open-source contributions) to elevate engineering craft across the broader organization.
- Drive adoption of modern engineering practices: CI/CD maturity, infrastructure-as-code, chaos engineering, AI-assisted development, and cloud-native architectures.
