Role Summary/Purpose:
The Android Software Engineer II - Digital Servicing is an individual contributor role responsible for building and maintaining high-quality Android native applications within the DSE India Mobile organization. This engineer participates in all phases of the agile development lifecycle, writing clean, scalable, and testable code while collaborating with cross-functional teams. Working within a cross-shore development environment, this role focuses on hands-on Android development, problem-solving, and contributing to operational excellence across Synchrony's consumer-facing mobile applications.
Key Responsibilities:
Participate in all phases of the Agile development lifecycle as a member of a cross-functional scrum team
Write and maintain clean, scalable, and well-documented Android application code using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
Collaborate with software developers, UX designers, product managers, application architects, and other stakeholders to build innovative mobile applications
Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily standups, backlog grooming sessions, and sprint reviews
Contribute to code quality through thorough code reviews, unit testing, and adherence to established coding standards
Implement new features and assist in migrating to new technologies and frameworks as needed
Analyze production defects, troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, and implement fixes
Ensure compliance with architecture, security, and technology standards set by Synchrony
Contribute to maintaining and improving CI/CD pipelines and build processes
Identify areas for operational improvements and implement necessary modifications
Document application processes, technical decisions, and change logs for future maintenance and upgrades
Manage source code effectively using Git-based version control workflows
Work with third-party vendors to develop software and/or integrate their software into the company's products
Support on-call rotations periodically throughout the year for production support
Participate in technical story writing, estimation, and sprint delivery commitments
Stay current with the latest Android technologies, open-source projects, and industry trends
Required Skills/Knowledge:
Proficiency in Android development using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
Experience building and consuming RESTful web services and APIs
Solid understanding of Android fundamentals including the Activity/Fragment lifecycle, networking, debugging, and memory management
Familiarity with Android architecture patterns such as MVVM, MVP, or Clean Architecture
Experience writing unit, integration, and UI test cases
Understanding of object-oriented design and development patterns
Experience with version control systems such as Git and Bitbucket
Familiarity with continuous integration environments
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Understanding of Agile methodologies and development practices
Desired Skills/Knowledge:
Experience with Jetpack libraries (Navigation, Room, WorkManager, DataStore)
Familiarity with dependency injection frameworks such as Dagger 2, Hilt, or Koin
Experience with reactive programming using Kotlin Coroutines and Flow
Familiarity with libraries and frameworks such as Retrofit, OkHttp, and Glide/Coil
Knowledge of JSON, REST, and XML-based web services
Working knowledge of the overall mobile industry including iOS and mobile web
Experience with mobile CI/CD platforms like Bitrise or CloudBees/Jenkins
Familiarity with observability tools like New Relic, Splunk, or Cloudwatch
Experience developing and supporting financial/banking applications
Experience with accessibility compliance and Material Design guidelines
Familiarity with Play Store submission processes and release management
Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical peers
Strong cross-functional team player with the ability to work seamlessly across a matrix organization
Desire to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
Strong attention to detail in a team environment
Ability to analyze, use structured problem solving and available tools to troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, action plans, impact, and resolution options
Eligibility Criteria:
Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years relevant experience in Information Technology, or in lieu of a degree 4+ years of relevant experience in information Technology.
Work Timings: 2PM to 11PM IST
This role qualifies for Enhanced Flexibility and Choice offered in Synchrony India and will require the incumbent to be available between 06:00 AM Eastern Time – 11:30 AM Eastern Time (timings are anchored to US Eastern hours and will adjust twice a year locally). This window is for meetings with India and US teams. The remaining hours will be flexible for the employee to choose. Exceptions may apply periodically due to business needs.
