About the Role:
Nationwide is seeking an experienced Scrum Master to support the NIO team and help lead a high-performing, self-organized Agile team. This role will facilitate delivery, strengthen team effectiveness, remove impediments, and build strong partnerships across U.S. and NIO-based stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is a servant leader with demonstrated success guiding Agile teams through complex technology delivery. They will bring strong written and verbal communication skills, confident leadership, excellent facilitation, and hands-on experience with Jira Cloud.
Experience supporting Guidewire InsuranceNow (GIN) or Data and Analytics teams is strongly preferred. GIN-related work may include policy administration, integrations, batch processing, data movement, ETL, or operational stability initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a servant leader, coach, and facilitator for the Agile team.
- Establish and continuously improve Scrum, Kanban, Lean, and other Agile practices.
- Facilitate daily standups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, retrospectives, and other team cadences.
- Partner with the Product Owner, Tech Lead, QE, Technology Analysts, business stakeholders, and delivery partners to maintain alignment and maximize business value.
- Guide works from intake and story creation through development, testing, deployment, and operational handoff.
- Remove impediments, escalate obstacles requiring outside resolution, and drive timely mitigation of risks and issues.
- Promote transparency through accurate Jira Cloud boards, dashboards, dependencies, release plans, and delivery reporting.
- Monitor and communicate delivery health using appropriate metrics, including flow, throughput, predictability, quality, risks, and impediments.
- Improve the quality and clarity of Jira work items, acceptance criteria, estimates, dependencies, and release information.
- Coordinate cross-team dependencies with related lines, including Scrum Sharks and Data/ETL teams, as appropriate.
- Facilitate effective communication across U.S.-based and NIO-based team members, vendors, and business partners.
- Coach team members and stakeholders in Agile principles, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe, and high-performing team environment.
- Encourage automation, DevOps/DataOps practices, quality ownership, and continuous delivery improvements.
- Support secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Identify opportunities to improve team maturity, delivery efficiency, quality, and stakeholder confidence.
- Participate in Scrum Master communities of practice and share effective methods across teams.
Required Qualifications:
- Significant experience serving as a Scrum Master, Agile Lead, or equivalent role.
- Demonstrated experience leading Agile technology teams through complex delivery efforts.
- Strong knowledge of Scrum and practical experience with Kanban, Lean, or other Agile approaches.
- Strong leadership, facilitation, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority and build trust across organizational levels.
- Hands-on experience with Jira Cloud, including boards, workflows, dashboards, reporting, dependencies, and backlog management.
- Experience identifying delivery risks, removing impediments, and coordinating cross-team dependencies.
- Ability to work effectively with globally distributed and cross-functional teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a team-first mindset.
- Ability to use delivery metrics to identify trends, communicate status, and drive measurable improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Guidewire InsuranceNow (GIN), Guidewire implementations, policy administration, or insurance technology.
- Experience supporting data, analytics, data warehouse, ETL, DataOps, or reporting teams.
- Experience with GIN integrations, batch processing, data pipelines, or operational stability initiatives.
- Experience working with teams that include offshore or globally distributed delivery partners.
- Experience in the insurance or financial services industry.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, test automation, or secure software delivery practices.
- Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Professional ScrumMaster (PSM), SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), or comparable Agile certification.
- Undergraduate study in computer science, management information systems, mathematics, or a related field.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Coaches and mentor team members on Agile practices and principles.
Removes impediments to the team’s progress; escalate obstacles requiring outside resolution. Identifies risks and issues that might have an impact on delivery and facilitates a mitigation strategy.
Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
Assists in the prioritization of work to maximize value towards business outcomes.
Collaborates with the Agile Team(s) to provide guidance in the areas of analysis, design, development, testing, automation, and deployment while ensuring the best capability practices are used.
Guides and enables DevOps, DataOps, AI/MLOps through the adoption and refinement of Agile practices.
Monitors and reports on team progress and performance through enterprise and industry metrics while maintaining data quality supporting metric accuracy.
Collaborates with team and leadership on demand and financials. Actively participates in variable staffing functions for the line.
Facilitates team cadences (e.g., retrospective, daily standups, and show-and-tell meetings) to encourage collaboration, communication, and feedback within the team; promote a learning culture and challenge the team to be innovative.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, mathematics or related field is strongly preferred.
Experience:
Three to five years of software delivery experience including two years as a Scrum Master or similar role. Strong technical expertise in one or more Agile practices and frameworks, including Scrum, Kanban, and Lean. Plus, a technical background in Software Engineering. Three or more years working with ALM tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
