Role Summary:

We are seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the technical strategy, architecture, and delivery of our streaming application across a diverse connected-device ecosystem, including Smart TVs, Android TV, Fire TV, set-top boxes (STBs), game consoles, and other living-room platforms.

You will be the technical authority for device porting and playback integration, ensuring the application delivers a consistent, high-quality viewing experience across different hardware capabilities, operating systems, DRM implementations, and video-player stacks. You will work closely with Player Engineering, Product, Design, QA/SDET, Platform, Analytics, and partner/device manufacturers to scale our device footprint while maintaining performance, reliability, and maintainability.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role, combining deep engineering expertise with cross-functional influence and ownership of complex multi-platform delivery.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

  • Define and own the technical strategy for porting and maintaining the streaming application across Smart TVs, Android TV, Fire TV, STBs, and other connected-device platforms.
  • Lead the integration and optimisation of video playback functionality across device platforms, including live and on-demand streaming, adaptive bitrate playback, subtitles, audio tracks, DRM, advertising, and error recovery.
  • Evaluate new device platforms, operating systems, SDKs, player technologies, and manufacturer requirements; provide technical recommendations and delivery estimates.
  • Partner with Player Engineering to resolve complex playback issues across different device hardware, operating systems, network environments, and DRM implementations.
  • Drive performance optimisation for low-memory, low-powered, and legacy devices, including application start-up time, navigation responsiveness, video start time, memory usage, and crash rates.
  • Work closely with SDET and QA teams to establish device test strategies, automation approaches, certification readiness, and release-quality gates.
  • Collaborate with external platform partners, device manufacturers, and certification bodies to meet technical, compliance, and release requirements.
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical direction and code/design reviews, and raise engineering standards across the Device Engineering team.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of Software Engineering experience, preferably in Media Streaming or OTT platforms.
  • Demonstrable experience building, porting, or maintaining consumer applications across multiple connected-TV or device platforms.
  • Strong experience with relevant technologies JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, React.js
  • Deep understanding of OTT video streaming and playback technologies, including HLS, MPEG-DASH, adaptive bitrate streaming, manifests, codecs, captions/subtitles, and multi-audio support.
  • Strong practical knowledge of DRM technologies, including Widevine, PlayReady, FairPlay, and device/platform-specific DRM constraints.
  • Experience with connected-device ecosystems such as Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Android TV/Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, STBs, or game consoles.
  • Strong understanding of device constraints, including hardware variation, CPU/GPU limitations, memory management, remote-control navigation, network variability, and operating-system fragmentation.
Strong debugging and problem-solving capability, including diagnosing complex production issues using logs, telemetry, crash reports, and playback/QoE analytics.
  •  Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical decisions to engineering, product, operational, and external partner stakeholders.
